S.O.I: For everybody who doesn’t know, put them on game…Who is Verse Simmonds?
Verse Simmonds: A young man from the Virgin Islands, signed to DarkChild/Interscope Records Records. I have a single out called “Buy You A Round” The ladies are really fucking with it right now, I appreciate that!…lol…You know I’m the Bachelor, I’m in it to win it, I’m in it for the ladies and that’s who Verse Simmonds is.
S.O.I: The Sex Tape Chronicles. How did you come up with the name and the concept?
Verse Simmonds: The Sex Tape Chronicles are first of series of mixtapes or “sex tapes” that I’m putting out. Basically it’s something I want people to be able to club to as well as make love to. That was my soul purpose of The Sex Tape Chronicles.
S.O.I: I know you roll with a pretty influential crew, how did you link up with Rodney “DarkChild” Jerkins & Rock City?
Verse Simmonds: Well Rock City and myself been best friends since 7th grade, so we grew up together. I’ve also been writing and producing music since about 2003 officially. I had moved out to LA to work for an independent label from there I ended up moving to Atlanta because Rock City keep telling me this was the place to be. So I came down here and started doing the same thing, working with Rodney (Jerkins) producing for artist and stuff like that. I always been an artist, but it was something I put to the back burner til I felt I got my writing and production off. In the mist of all that I started creating my own music, and I said you know what there is a lot of new artist out here now, and my chances are as good as the rest of them. So I decided to take it from the back burner and move it to the front and let people see what I’m doing.
S.O.I: Your style is quite a bit different, not only from whats on radio but from anything I’ve every heard from the Caribbean scene, could you describe your style?
Verse Simmonds: I call my style Island B. Which is a mixture of Caribbean influences combined with Hip Hop & R&B. I think that’s what’s going to make me stand out from everybody else in the game. Because you can’t necessarily put me in one lane as far as saying “Ok well he’s an R&B artist.” You can’t call me a Hip Hop artist either. It’s something I realized after I created the bulk of my album, because people kept saying “what do you call your style, I mean you sing, but I wouldn’t necessarily call you a singer, you rap but your really not a rapper.” So like I said I decided to call it what it is, Island B.
S.O.I: I know a lot of people are interested in not only your upcoming mixtape The Sex Tape Chronicles and your upcoming album Stories Of A Bachelor but in Verse Simmonds himself…so where can they find out about all that?
Verse Simmonds: Haha…Well they can follow me on Twitter! @Verse2Hook. Thats what I update for all my shows, all my listening sessions…everything I do is there! And you can always swing by my MySpace.com/VerseSimmonds for the music. Other than that stay tuned to the radio and in the clubs, itunes and watch for the official “Buy You A Round” video coming soon!
